Saturday, May 6, 2017
7:30 – 8:30 a.m. on field
This is a kilted event and ATHLETES MUST BE ON THE FIELD BY 8:00 A.M. The award ceremony will take place immediately following the competition and awards will be presented for top athlete in each of the divisions, "Athlete of the Day" and "Sportsman of the Day". Bog Gourley is the Games Athletic Director. For more information, please contact: Janice Clement at Janice.firstname.lastname@example.org
Scottish heavy athletics owe their roots to the Highland warriors who would keep in shape between battles by competing among themselves using everyday implements. A stone, a blacksmith’s hammer, a tree trunk (caber) all became tools for building strength for battle! When the English forbid any Scotsman to bear arms these alternatives to traditional weapons were used to select the finest athletes for war. Clan warriors competed in these types of heavy athletic events to demonstrate their relative strength so it is fitting that clan tents line the athletic field at today’s event.
Come challenge other kilt-donning athletes in events including the Caber Toss, Sheaf Toss, Scottish Hammer Throw, Open Stone Put and much more! The most spectacular event is the Caber Toss – ‘ye casting of the bar’. This feat of strength, balance and agility has remained basically unchanged over the centuries.
Registration Fee is $20 PER PERSON and includes:
- Free lunch
- General admission for the athlete
- A free Savannah Scottish Games t-shirt (register early to ensure sizing)
We encourage all beginners (novices) who would like to learn to throw to be on the filed at 7:30 on the day of the Games for a one hour clinic. No kilts are required for the clinic. Only registered Novices will be throwing from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. so get your Registration in early as space is limited.
