Savannah Scottish Games

The 34th Annual Savannah Scottish Games

Cead mile fàilte! (a hundred-thousand welcomes!)

The Savannah Scottish Games are a wonderful way to celebrate and experience Celtic heritage.

The American South was settled in large part by Scottish immigrants. The influence of those early Scots can today be seen in the names of streets, cities, and counties, as well as in existing traditions, folklore, and common sayings.

The Savannah Games are held on the campus of the historic Bethesda Home for Boys. Gates open at 9:00 a.m.

Events include piping competition, bagpipe bands, highland dancing competition, Scottish heavy athletics, Scottish immigrant re-enactors, modern Celtic music, border-collie herding and obedience demonstrations, and children’s events.

Also available are delicious Scottish & American foods, vendors offering Celtic wares, genealogists eager and willing to answer questions, and the backbone of all Scottish Games, clan tents that offer information about their clans while seeking and welcoming long-lost distant relatives.

BETHESDA HOME FOR BOYS

The Savannah Scottish Games are held among stately, moss-draped live oaks on the campus of Bethesda Home for Boys, overlooking the Moon River. Moon River was made immortal by Savannah native Johnny Mercer and Henry Mancini in their theme song for the movie, Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

In 1740, with the encouragement of Charles and John Wesley, the Reverend George Whitefield founded Bethesda Home for Boys as an orphanage on land granted by King George. Benjamin Franklin was an early contributor. Bethesda is now the oldest continuously-operated children’s home in the United States. The Bethesda School provides grades three through twelve to its 125 resident and non-resident boys.

Bethesda boys, alumni and staff continue to be guided by the three core values the Rev. Whitefield believed essential in building young men: Love of God, Love of Learning, and a Strong Work Ethic.
